The Tata Group is a huge multinational conglomerate with its headquarters in India, with many subsidiary and joint venture businesses. Tata Sons Limited is the holding company of the Tata Group and holds the majority of shareholdingin this group of companies. T.R. Doongaji hails from Nagpur in India, where Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. At around the age of 6-years-old, his cousin would accompany him to the temple. Before entering the building, he'd ask the young man to bow his head to a bust which was "the founder" placed on an elevated pedestal. "I did what he asked me to," Says Doongaji. "Today, I realise that my entire identity is this name." A J.N. Tata researcher, the scholar worked for 52 years (42 as an executive) working for Tata Group and was the managing director in three groups of companies.Jamsetji introduced a provident fund scheme for his employees, the first of this type in India, and an accident compensation fund.Ratan Tata spearheaded the group's international expansion. It was not just the big-bang purchases, but also a well-thought-out expansion that capitalized on the strengths of the Tata Group.
Some time ago, some politicians in Nagpur had a plan to change the name of the convocation hall of Nagpur University, the J.N. Tata Hall, to a local leader's name. A friend from Nagpur called Doongaji to ask whether he had any information about the hall. Doongaji dug through archives of the Tata Central Archives to see how the hall was given the name. "We discovered that the Empress Mills Nagpur had contributed to the construction of the hall and we had the complete record. We recently won that instance in the High Court. I will not tolerate anyone to do anything in Tata's name or property," says Parsi, who is proud of his victory. Parsi.
A few businesses can boast this kind of loyalty from its people. It is also, Doongaji attributes it to the leadership at Tata Group. "Between the founder and Cyrus [Mistry], there have been four chairmen--three were knighted and one is a Bharat Ratna," says Doongaji. "How many organizations can boast of that kind of leadership?
It all started when Jamsetji bought a ten-acre piece of marshy land from the Nagpur King and established Empress Mills. (It was established as a company in Bombay in 1874 under the name of Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji started a trading company in 1868.)
Jamsetji did not want his workers to be working in the conditions of squalor that he witnessed in Lancashire's cotton mills. So, for Empress Mills, he ensured adequate ventilation, and also had an apparatus for humidifying air. Sprinklers were put in place to minimize the destruction caused from accidental fires. He also established a provident fund scheme that was one of the very first in India as well as an accident compensation fund.
After Jamsetji came back to Bombay He had earned enough money that he decided to turn his attention towards purchasing property. Then, he became one of the wealthiest people in the country. While visiting the US at the request by industrialist George Westinghouse, Jamsetji saw the hydroelectric project at the Niagara Falls. Jamsetji had been planning a hydroelectric project in India and the visit firmed up the decision. Within the Lonavala and Khandala regions within the Western Ghats, which gets one of the highest amounts of rainfall anywhere in the world, and has the right kind of soils, valleys, and slopes, he started his work of the Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company. The massive pipes carried water to the foot of the hill at Khopoli, where at the powerhouse it was transformed to electrical energy. This project turned out be a game-changer, as it provided electricity to Bombay, a city growing rapidly. Bombay.
Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company was officially registered as a public concern on November 7 in 1910. The company started the project on February 11, 1915 when Lord Willingdon, the governor of Bombay established it. "Today, the major chunk of our power is being supplied to industries, hospitals and residences," states Rajesh G. Naik, head of maintenance and operations at Tata Power. The total power plant's capacity is 447mw.
A big attraction at The project's 14 acres gardens in Lonavala. Jamsetji was a passionate enthusiast in the garden, and he brought home seeds and plants from all over the world. When the steel plant at Jamshedpur was under construction, he wrote a detailed note to his son Dorabji on the growing number of trees he wanted to grow on his property. Said Vivek Vishwasrao, head of biodiversity at Tata Power: "We fall in the northern part of the Western Ghats which is a important bio-diversity hotspot. The species of animals, plants and birds that are found here are not seen elsewhere in the world." In the same way, the stunning Tata Baug, built in 1891 on 22 acres of Navsari it is maintained by Dr. Rohinton Avari. Avari has completed a doctoral in landscape gardening.
Jamsetji used to be an "omnivorous reader", and was a lover of Dickens and Thackeray. "He was fond of driving, a keen judge of horseflesh and was pleased with the quality of his horses, whether Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians and of his clever turnout. He was also fond of sailing and boating, and entertaining his friends at picnics," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Chronicle of his Life.
When it comes to "firsts Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy's achievements stand out. From obtaining India's very first pilot's licence , to the creation of the first cancer center in the country, J.R.D. Tata planted the seeds of the development of India. He was the son of R.D. Tata was a nephew of Jamsetji's mom, as was her mother was Suzanne Briere, a French citizen. He was born in Paris and spent his childhood in France. After the death of his father his son succeeded him as director of Tata Sons at the age of 22.
J.R.D. became J.R.D. Tata Sons chairman in 1938 at the age 34. Tata Sons had 14 companies at the time. When he left in 1991 it was 95. However, his contribution went far over and above Tata Group and its businesses. For instance, he assisted Homi Bhabha set up India's atomic energy programme. He also helped Homi Bhabha's older brother Jamshed Bhabha establish the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.Matter of loyalty: T.R. Doongaji | Janak Bhat
The brightest of the businesses J.R.D. created was Tata Airlines (which later became Air India), as it quickly earned a world-wide reputation as one of the finest airlines. "J.R.D. would always claim"that Air India was his first love and I'd love to hear him declare"that Tata Steel was his second," says J.J. Irani who was the previous manager of Tata Steel. "He would laugh at that, but he never gave me an answer."
